Do The DU!

The big boys took part in a duathlon here in Montgomery this weekend!! Jack did it last year and knew back then that he wanted to do it again. James had never done one before. He did a 1/2 mile kid run when he was 3, but barely finished it, not surprisingly! After watching Jack race in the duathlon and a triathlon last summer, James wanted to give it a try! Mostly because he wanted a medal and shirt too!

The summer has been so hectic so far that neither one of them trained for the race. A week ago we set up the distances for the boys to complete before committing to signing them up. Jack finished with a bit of walking. James wanted to stop after the bike and not do the second run. However, I reminded him that he wouldn't be able to sign up if he couldn't finish. At a VERY slow walking pace and lots of stops, he eventually crawled across the finish of our practice race. We agreed to sign both of them up.

They had day camp last week including a 30 miles bus ride from here which resulted in very long days. They were beat! Jack had a swim meet Friday night straight from camp. The race was Sat morning. We ended up deciding at the last minute on Friday to sign them up for the race.

We're so glad we did! They did great! And they both had great attitudes! I asked James if he wanted me to cheer for him and he kindly said, "no." Talk about difficult!!! It's HARD not to cheer out loud for your kid!!! Of course my heart was cheering loud and clear!

Jack finished well before James, as expected. But the coolest thing happened. Jack finished the race and then waited for James to come in from the bike. When James put his bike up, Jack met him at the start of his last run. He started running next to him and talking to him, encouraging him along. I thought he was going to pull off after a minute or so, but he kept going with James. He ran next to him the entire half mile until just before the finish line where he then split off from James so he could finish. It was so cool to see their friendship in full bloom.

Needless to say, it was a proud morning for Me and Jason. Later on in the day, we found out James won 1st place in his division of only three boys! But still...he got out there and rocked it! They both did!!!
